Futures Markets: Where Hope Goes to Be Priced
Right now, futures odds for the national title look like a crowded elevator: a few giants at the top, and a lot of teams smashed together below them.
On ESPN’s futures board, Ohio State, Texas A&M(after surviving South Carolina), Georgia, Oregon and friends are living in the single- and low double-digit odds world, with everyone else lurking further down the sheet. From our side of the counter, futures season is glorious:
- In April: “Put me down for $50 on [INSERT TEAM OUTSIDE THE TOP 25] to win it all. This is the year.”

Handle Heaven: How Much Will Be Bet?
We don’t have an official “CFP handle” estimate yet, but we can cheat by looking at March Madness. The American Gaming Association projects that Americans will legally wager about $3.1 billion on the men’s and women’s NCAA basketball tournaments in 2025, up from $2.7 billion in 2024.
That’s basketball. With 68 teams. Over weeks. In every time slot.
Now imagine:
- A 12-team football playoff
- Fewer games, but each one is a nuclear event
- More legalized states every year
- More apps, more promos, more “bet $5, get a bonus the size of a used Honda” offers
We’re not saying CFP handle gets to March Madness levels overnight. But as the format matures, don’t be shocked if playoff weekends start putting up ridiculous numbers—especially with same-game parlays, live betting and props for every QB’s passing yards, every receiver’s yardage, and probably the over/under on how many times the broadcast shows someone’s crying band member.

As the bracket locks, everyone who grabbed longshots months ago suddenly becomes a “hedging expert.”
