OpenAI and SoftBank Group have together pledged a $1 billion strategic investment into SB Energy, a SoftBank-backed renewable energy and infrastructure developer, in a move that underscores the growing recognition that next-generation artificial intelligence will demand massive power and data-center capacity.
Under the agreement, each company — the San Francisco-based AI pioneer and its largest financial backer respectively — is contributing $500 million to accelerate SB Energy’s build-out of critical energy and data infrastructure that will help support AI workloads at unprecedented scale.
Why This Matters: AI Needs Power — Lots of It
The investment comes at a time when AI systems, particularly large language models and generative tools like ChatGPT, require enormous amounts of electricity to train and run. Traditional data centers already rank among the world’s largest energy consumers, and AI’s rapid growth has accelerated that trend. To meet this demand, tech companies are increasingly investing directly in power generation and energy infrastructure — not just renting space from third-party cloud providers.
SB Energy, originally established by SoftBank in 2019 to build renewable energy and storage projects, has expanded its focus to include not just clean energy but also data-center development and operation. The company currently operates several gigawatt-scale projects and has plans to bring additional large facilities online in the coming years.

Centerpiece: A 1.2 GW AI Data Campus in Texas
A key beneficiary of the investment will be SB Energy’s work on a 1.2 gigawatt data center campus in Milam County, Texas. To put that scale in perspective, 1 GW of capacity is enough to power roughly 750,000 U.S. homes at once — and the electricity demands of AI systems are only rising.
OpenAI selected SB Energy to both build and operate the Texas site, which will become part of the larger Stargate initiative — a multi-site network of facilities designed to support AI training and inference workloads nationwide.
Stargate: The $500B AI Buildout Underway
The investment dovetails with Stargate, a vast AI infrastructure program backed by OpenAI alongside SoftBank, Oracle, and other partners. Initially announced with a projected $100 billion in early commitments and plans to scale toward $500 billion, Stargate aims to establish a nationwide network of AI data hubs powered by renewable energy and advanced data-center design.
Under this broader effort, multiple sites across the U.S. — including locations in Ohio and Texas — have been selected for advanced computing campuses that can deliver multiple gigawatts of capacity. Those facilities are intended to support AI infrastructure needs that conventional cloud platforms struggle to meet.
SoftBank’s Strategic Role
SoftBank — chaired by Masayoshi Son — has evolved its infrastructure focus over recent years, positioning SB Energy as a critical player in the intersection of power generation and data-intensive computing. In addition to renewable energy projects, SoftBank has committed tens of billions of dollars to AI ventures, including OpenAI itself, where it remains one of the company’s largest investors.

This latest investment solidifies that relationship by aligning capital, engineering expertise, and strategic objectives. SB Energy will not only build key facilities for OpenAI but will also become a customer of OpenAI’s own AI services, integrating tools like ChatGPT for internal operations.
The Infrastructure Arms Race
The deal highlights a broader industry shift: tech giants are scrambling to secure infrastructure — both data and power — that can sustain the next wave of AI innovation. Companies like Meta and Google have announced similarly ambitious investments in energy and computing capacity, often emphasizing renewable sources to offset the environmental impact of AI workloads.
For OpenAI, this funding supports a strategy of owning or co-owning parts of its deployment stack, helping insulate its operations from capacity shortages and price volatility in commercial cloud markets. The investment also underscores how deeply energy and compute are intertwined in the future of AI technology.
