Oppo’s Find X aims for the iPhone with a pop-up camera (and a premium price)
Oppo joins Vivo in building notch-free phones with pop-up cameras
Oppo showed off its latest flagship phone the Find X at an event in Paris on Tuesday -- becoming the second phone this month to ditch the notch in favor of a pop-up camera.
What’s notable is that it also has a 3D facial scanner and no fingerprint sensor at all -- just like the iPhone X. Virtually all other major Android handsets still have fingerprint sensors because their facial recognition systems don’t use 3D scanning, and therefore aren’t as secure as fingerprint sensors.
Design wise, you could be forgiven for thinking you’re looking at a Samsung S9 -- minus the bezels -- thanks to the Find X’s curved edges and premium looks.
But that is kind of the point: The Find X is Oppo’s is seen as the company’s attempt to enter the big league with a premium device to compete with Apple and Samsung.
And it’s priced to match, starting at US$1,150 -- making it even more expensive than the iPhone X’s US$999 price tag.
It’s also the first time Oppo will market the device in North America and Europe -- potentially representing a new direction for the company as it seeks to move beyond a reliance on Asia.
Vivo delivers a handset with nothing but screen on the front
Camera wise, it sports a pretty impressive 25 megapixel front-facing camera and a dual 20 and 16 megapixel camera set-up for the rear-facing cameras, which also sit in the top camera section of the phone -- meaning no camera bump.
Powering the device is the same processor found in some Samsung Galaxy S9 devices -- Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845 -- in addition to a respectable 8GB of RAM and up to 256GB of storage.
It also has some other nifty features like its proprietary VOOC fast charging system as well as space for two SIM cards, though it does leave out wireless charging and a headphone jack.
Not to be outdone by Huawei’s Porsche tie-up, Oppo also announced a Lamborghini edition of the phone which will retail for US$1,930 and come with 512GB of storage and a carbon-fibre back.
The Find X will be available from August.
